The Garden Studio — Private Artist Studio in Ashland, OR
Design & Build, Remodel & Addition
From aging barn to chic art studio
Denise, a brilliant painter working in acrylics, came to me with a 100-year-old barn that she wanted to convert into an art studio. At the time I was working with her brother, Darin, an amazing wood worker and carpenter; and I was thrilled to help create a new space for Denise. Using a local architect to draft the project for me, I designed a remodel and addition to the old structure creating a truly functional studio that supports her needs as a working artist for light, space and beauty.
The foundation and stem wall uses concrete colored to match the hue of the local earth after a rain, and has integrated vents made from rock crushing vents. New wood was locally sourced sugar pine milled up from a local mill. With the vernacular of the old barn seamlessly matched, I added my own flare, installing French doors with a round trellis for the entry and an open arcade on the ceiling inside to let natural light from the skylights flood in and give Denise the perfect setting for painting. Sitting in the midst of a lush garden, the new space will stand the test of time for at least another 100 years.
